Top Facts & Myths about Air Purifiers

Thinking about enhancing the air quality in your business, school, or home? As you search, you may come upon many myths about air purifiers, making it a challenge for you to determine what features you should look for.

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the top myths and facts about air purifiers to help you make the best decision possible.

  1. Air Purifiers Really Work

Air purifiers are one of the most effective ways to improve indoor air quality.

True! Air purifiers can be one of the most effective ways to improve indoor air quality (IAQ), and here’s why.
Several organizations, like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have recommendations for ways to improve IAQ. One of the most touted and easily accessible ways to improve IAQ is via the implementation of a HEPA air purifier, like our ISO-Aire models. A HEPA purifier traps 99.97% of airborne particles at its worst level of performance. Air particles captured by a HEPA air purifier include bacteria, viruses, mold, and allergens like pollen, pet dander, and dust. This also includes PM2.5, or fine particulate matter most dangerous to human health at high concentrations.

2. Air Purifiers Lower Humidity

False. Air purifiers are designed to enhance indoor air quality (IAQ), but do not lower the humidity levels of the space they are in. A dehumidifier or other specialized equipment is required to lower humidity. On the other hand, if you are worried that an air purifier will dry out the air, do not be concerned. Air purifiers, like our ISO-Aire HEPA air purifiers, are designed to clean the air of contaminants, but will not remove moisture.

3. Air Purifiers Remove Dust

A HEPA filter works incredibly well to remove dust from the air. Selecting a HEPA air purifier for your space will help with dust and other airborne contaminants.

True! Using an air purifier that has a HEPA filter will help to reduce dust levels in your space. HEPA filters are a highly effective method of removing particulate matter from the air, including dust. However, dust is needed to be airborne in order for the process to work, so surface dust will not be able to be eliminated until it becomes airborne. You will notice a significant reduction in dust levels and cleaner air in your space after the introduction of a HEPA air purifier.

4. Air Purifiers are Dangerous

Depends. Although all electrical devices give off electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation, those produced by household appliances like microwave ovens, cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, and air purifiers are not at a high enough level to be dangerous. With air purifiers, it really depends on the design. Some air purifiers have been designed to generate ozone, which is harmful to living organisms, so take care to avoid those that produce ozone. Some air purifiers have ionizers that are UL2998 listed, meaning that they are ozone-free and safe, like our models at ISO-Aire.

5. Washable Air Purifiers are as Effective as HEPA Air Purifiers

False. Washable air purifiers incorporate a filter that is washable, but it is not a HEPA filter. Thus, they are unable to capture the smaller particles (like germs) that a HEPA filter can. If your goal is improved IAQ, it is not recommended to forego a HEPA filter, especially because a washable filter becomes even less effective after each wash.

6. Air Purifiers Reduce VOCs

True! With the proper selection of an air purifier, you can greatly reduce the level of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in your environment.  According to the EPA, VOCs are gas compounds produced from human-made chemicals that can be dangerous to our health. Present in many household products, including cleaners, paints, varnishes, furnishings, and detergents, VOCs are all around us.

Utilizing three layers of clean air technology and proper air flow design, ISO-Aire delivers clean air to building occupants up high, while pulling contaminated air low, away from the breathing zone.

With VOCs being at higher concentrations indoors than out, it is vital that the concentration of VOCs are kept low so as to avoid the negative health effects that can result, including headaches, nausea, fatigue, to even more dangerous things like cancer, and even death.

ISO-Aire HEPA air purifiers come equipped with up to three levels of air cleaning technologies, including a 99.97% effective HEPA filter, ozone-free bipolar ionization, and germicidal UVC to help remove VOCs, as well as germs and allergens, making the air cleaner and safer for you.
